Ask Eva: Massage for Neuropathy

I have neuropathy in my hands and feet. What kind of massage is best for neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a condition caused by damage to the nervous system.  Symptoms include pain, tingling, numbness and burning sensations, usually in the hands and feet. Diabetes is the most common cause of neuropathy, though there can be other reasons for the condition to manifest itself.

Some people with neuropathy find massage painful, while others find it helpful. For those with neuropathy who can tolerate massage, Swedish massage, focusing on restoring circulation and oxygenation in the affected limbs, is the most effective treatment. If you have neuropathy, let your therapist know the underlying reason, as this can affect massage treatment protocols.
